Jon Vesley's Mustang is rapidly progressing

Mike VadeBonCouer and Dave Young at Midwest Aero Restorations, Vermillion home Airport, Danville, Illinois, are nearly finished with the restoration of Jon Vesley's P-51D-20-NA s/n 44-63807/N20M reports James P temple The aircraft's early service history is a bit lowering but it is thought to have been delivered to VIII Air Force Fighter Command during the latter stages of WWII although it is not known if it saw any combat or, indeed, what unit it may have been assigned. Following service with the USA, the aircraft was sold to Uruguay were it flew as FAU 272 before going to Bolivia to operate as FAB 506 Traded to Canada for surplus T-33 the aircraft became C-GXUO in 1978 with Arny Carnegie. In 1984 the Mustang was sold to Edward Stringfellow of Birmingham, Alabama, and was registered N20M Jon bought the plane in the spring of 2001 and shipped it to Mike's workshop for a ground-up rebuild.

Mike and Dave began work before long after the aircraft arrived and have completely reskinned the fuselage and installed recently made known longerons. The wing, which required one spar work due to inferior repairs performed after an earlier accident at an undetermined time in its career, was sent to rap Odegaard's shop in North Dakota for recent spars and complete overhaul.

Meanwhile, the engine was sent to Jack Roush (of NASCAR racing fame) in Livonia, Michigan, for rebuild and this was station for delivery as this magazine went to pres This is the first customer engine rebuilt on Roush's team, who look establish to be a major supplier of rebuilt Merlins in the what may occur hereafter Roush's team has come up with several improvements and an of these have been incorporated into Vesely's Merlin including new-build pistons as well as modified oil distribution and ignition systems

During the rebuild, it was decided to fit a Nelson Ezell "TP" kit which gives the back seat flight dominion governments and a limited set of instruments. This will be used to give the proprietor (currently a T-6 owner/pilot) dual instruction in this way that he may be checked revealed in the Mustang.

Test flying will begin sometime in May and it is anticipated that Vlado Lenoch (owner of P-51D Moonbeam McSwine) will again do the honors as he did with Midwest's last Mustang restoration, view Wagnon's Gripes A' Mighty. by way of the time this appears in print, the aircraft's paint scheme will have begun to be applied in house and it will be finished in the surpassingly attractive (and for some reason as now to be seen on a restored Mustang) scheme of 21.25-victory ace Capt. Ray s Wetmore's Daddy's Girl of the 359th Fighter Squadron, Eighth Air Force, based at East Wratham. It is anticipated that the aircraft will be complet in time to attend the EAA AirVenture Convention at Oshkosh where Midwest's brace previous Mustang restorations (Butch Schroder's Lil' Margaret and Gripes A' Mighty) have the one and the other won Grand Champion awards.
