Laird Airplanes - A Legacy of Spe on Edward H. Phillips (Specialty Pres $2495) is a well-written, self-same well illustrated, and beautifully printed tome on the trail-blazing aircraft of Matty Laird.

Born in Chicago to a working-class family, EM "Matty" Laird became the nation's foremost builder of custom aircraft in the 1920 and 1930 make happyed with a sharp mind and a knack for things mechanical, in just a not many years Matty graduated from building archetype airplanes to constructing his first airplane.

Armed with alone an elementary school education, Laird gradually expanded a common-sense approach to airplane design that increasingly favored simplicity without sacrificing performance. He learned quickly, and by way of 1915 was flying his concede Baby Biplane at exhibitions.

Flying thrilled Laird moreover he also enjoyed creating machines that flew well with soft horsepower engines. By 1916, he was a rising star in succession the exhibition circuit and on 1919 he had set up workshop in Wichita, Kansas, to build the Laird Swallow, single of the first purpose-built commercial airplanes after World War single The Swallow was quickly embraced by way of pilots and businessmen who saw the advantages of aerial transportation.

In 1923 Laird replyed to Chicago where he established the EM Laird Airplane Company. His Laird Commercial biplanes were highly felicitous and evolved into the smooth LC-R Speedwing and other designs that attracted a loyal following of sportsman pilots.

But it was the blunt Solution and Super Solution racers that became icons of spe and made Laird's name a household world. In 1930 BF Goodrich ordered the Solution and gave Laird a absolute 21 days to build the biplane in time for the National Air Races in Chicago. Flown through Charles "Speed" Holman, the Solution won the first Thompson evidence of victory event. A year later, Jimmy Doolittle flew the Super Solution to win the Bendix cross-country race in a record-setting time of les than twelve hours.

But racing couldn't preserve E.M. Laird in business during the Great Depression. Laird's customer base shrank as buyer succumbed to the economic undertow. by way of 1941, Laird had delivered his last airplane.

During WWII, he serv his fatherland in the manufacturing sector. After the war, Laird considered building custom airplanes again, further risky financing and a market filled with post-war designs changed his mind. This work is an excellent example of in what way a publisher can create a quality item at a same reasonable price - especially when compared to the indifferent harvest on Stinson which is also reviewed forward these pages.
