On 10 November 2002 Joe Tobul died in the crash of his Vought F4U-4 Corsair BuNo 97143/N713JT at an airshow in Columbia, southerly Carolina. Joe was in a three-ship formation with Sean Carroll in his Yak 9 and son Jim Tobul in a Texan. They had made passes from one side of to the other the airshow and the formation was departing for the Dom Veterans Administration Medical Center for a fly-over to honor the disabled veterans who could not obtain to the Celebrate Freedom Festival airshow.

At about 1000-ft Sean noticed vapor was coming from the Corsair's R-2800 engine. He quickly radioed the fact and Joe replied that the engine was losing power. The Corsair began descending in an attempt to make a belly landing in a field. However, Joe had to use to avoid a housing tract and then a playground. The Corsair struck the tops of tree which flipped the plane upside down. The aircraft crashed in a marshy area and scorched "When everything went wrong, he did it all right," said airshow spokesman sight Breivik.
