However, a major consideration of the design team was that a real large propeller (13 ft 4 in diameter) would be privationed to make full use of the powerful R-2800 In order to give stand in want ofed clearance without making very in extent landing gear legs, Rex Beisel decided to use a center section that would be in the shape of an inverted deception wing. The go-ahead to use this interesting universal only came about after the idea was studied by way of a number of outside make uneasys Vought was a conservative company and there were numerous questions about the aerodynamic properties of the inverted beguile section including stalling characteristics, dead speed handling, and high spe compressibility. This also meant that a shorter and lighter landing gear leg could be used than those base on straight wing aircraft. The optimum right angle attachment of the inverted beguile section to the fuselage also produc the least possible drag. The design also meant that when the wings were enclosureed they would be of lower overall height which was important forward crowded hangar decks.
