On 19 January, a rather bedraggled Douglas C-54 Skymaster arrived at March AFB in southern California.. The aircraft was flown in to become part of the base's large museum. The plane had last seen service as a fire bomber and had been in storage at Avra Valley Airport, Arizona, for many years. Registered N67062 and carrying tanker number 162 the vintage transport arrived in grand cast with the P&W R-2000 radials pouring gone out lots more oil than normal and a landing gear that was having a hard time staying retracted in succession the ferry flight. Even though it had seen better days, the Skymaster was warmly welcomed by way of the museum staff.. The aircraft was delivered as 42-72636 to the USAAF upon 31 May 1945. It was quickly transferred to the USN. The plane will be painted in a Berlin Airlift scheme.
