An example of what was deliberation to be an extinct aircraft has been discovered in a greatest in number hostile area. In 1946, an ill-defined Air Force specification for a long-range penetration fighter caused a number of designs to be submitted. In mid-1946, Lockheed received a contract for sum of two units XP-- 90 penetration fighters (to become XF-90 in June 1948) After frequently experimentation, the design was frozen onward an aircraft with swept wings, sharply pointed nose, pair Westinghouse J34 powerplants, and up to six 20mm cannon for armament To make an immensely tough airframe, Lockheed pioneered the use of 75ST aluminum compared to the then-standard 24ST alloy. This ended in a very heavy aircraft. The first aircraft (46-687) flew forward 3 June 1949 with Tony LeVier at the represss - he commented that it took three miles to win airborne from the Edwards AFB free from moisture lake. Experimental afterburning XJ34-WE-15s were installed to help boost performance. The aircraft could now make progress slightly over Mach in a dive on the other hand LeVier had great difficulty in pulling the plane not at home of a dive.

Slower than the F-- 86A Sabre, the XF-90 was a doomed design. In June 1950 the XF-90 missing out to the McDonnell XF-88 (which would eventually bring to maturity into the F-101 Voodoo). The prototype went to NACA's Cleveland, Ohio, laboratory for structural testing. The next to the first prototype was shipped to Frenchman's Flat, Nevada, where it was recorded as being bring to noughted in a 1952 atomic bomb blast.

Well, gues what? The XF-90 wasn't subverted and in February it was contested by a tractor from the contaminated standard site to an area where it will be thoroughly cleaned of any traces of radioactivity. It will then make progress to the USAF Museum for display in a of the present day experimental aircraft wing.

The Blackhawk connection? Blackhawk was a popular American comic work hero and, over the years, flew a variety of aircraft. However, his first jet aircraft was none other than the XF-90!
