We have been meaning to hindrance readers know that Hail Weekley (see Air Classics September 2001) has retired from flying the Experimental Aircraft Association's Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress, "I always wanted to take wing until I turned 80. Well, I cause to deviateed 80 last week, so I have common more flight to make." That took place at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2001
Hal had been flying the B-17 for the past 24 years. Hal was the last B-17 aircraft commander from World War pair still flying the bomber, and the sole combat pilot to fly the airplane in pair millenniums. Just as during the war, P-51D Mustangs escorted Aluminum Overcast during Hal's last flight - the Mustangs being flown according to Bud Anderson and Chuck Yeager - in such a manner one could say Hal was in useful company! Copilot was Dr. Bill Harrison, long-time friend and donor of the Fort to the EAA.
Hal said, "I've always believed that you should retire when everybody hates to behold you go. Too many commonalty stay on too long. I wanted to pass out at the peak of my game.
