AMERICAN HEROES

Saga of US pilots during World War couple

The American fighter pilot cadet was an intelligent young man in his late teen or early 20 - they came from all walks of life, just starting their lives and frequently leaving their first years of society They were selected from the best of American youth, with admission standards frequently more restrictive than any other branch of the military.

The hastily trained cadet became the pilot who, early in the war, flew inferior aircraft of the like kind as the Airacobra, Wildcat, and Buffalo against a better trained and more experienced enemy pilot who flew superior equipment.

These early war American pilots knowingly flew against great left over s and held the line until American know-how and can-- do attitude allowed its massive industrial base to engage its potential. Their sacrifice allowed recent pilots time to enter a training scheme that produc superior, well-trained pilots, and American industry to unfold and produce superior new designs in the same state or condition as the Corsair, Hellcat, lightning-flash Lightning, and Mustang.

Well-trained pilots flying superior of the present day fighter aircraft against an enemy who was losing its best pilots and unable to afford the epicurism of extended training, brought about the inevitable defeat of the Axis air forces.

After the war, these young men took a leading place in American society and industry. Victory Roll: The American Fighter Pilot and Aircraft in World War II through William Wolf (Schiffer, $59.95) declares their story in a massive 464-page tome
